A court reporter is a professional who is responsible for producing official transcripts of the official proceeding such as court hearings by transcribing the recorded or spoken speech in a written form, using machine shorthand, voice writing equipment or shorthand.

Typically, it takes around two to four years to master the basic skills of Court Reporting. And to master the basic skills of a voice writer reporter it takes approx. six to nine months. It takes typically a year and a half to become proficient in voice writing of Realtime Court Reporting.

Usually the candidates go for specialized certificate courses, or any bachelor's or associate's degree programs such as College Court Reporting, at accredited universities or colleges.Moreover various online training and Distance learning courses are also available for the aspirants.

The Licensed court reporters in order to maintain their license need to attend education courses on continuous basis. The minimum requirement of speed to become a certified court reporter is 225 words a minute with minimum accuracy percent of 98 on the transcripts, and both transcribers and reporters must pass both a practical and written examination.Plus, the student needs to complete minimum of 50 hours of internship, and 60 hours of verified writing time.

In case the student successfully completes all the requirements for Broadcast Captioning Specialization, he/she has to for an advanced specialization, which teaches the student to write the Registered Professional Reporter examination and then he/she is officially allotted the title of Certified Broadcast Caption-er- this title is the certified proof of the professional status of the individual.
